STRATEGIC TRANSFORMATION OF UKRAINE’S DIGITAL BUSINESS VALUE CHAINS UNDER WARTIME CONDITIONS
Abstract
Purpose: This study substantiates the strategic transformation of Ukraine’s digital business value chains under wartime conditions and develops an integrated conceptual model linking external shocks to changes in primary and supporting activities, and to measurable customer and business outcomes. Methodology: The research uses a qualitative analytical design that combines a critical review of value chain theory and Value Stream Mapping (VSM), synthesis and comparison of empirical and analytical evidence on wartime constraints in Ukraine, and generalisation of organisational responses applied by Ukrainian IT companies to maintain continuity and protect customer value. The model links key drivers (energy, connectivity, security, logistics, market turbulence) with transformation mechanisms and strategic results. Results: The study shows that wartime performance depends on the stability of energy supply, telecommunications, cybersecurity, and logistics, which determine service feasibility and delivery costs. The proposed model describes a sequence from wartime and macroeconomic drivers to value chain reconfiguration and outcomes. Four transformation directions are identified: customer-oriented revision of business models and service propositions; digitalisation of value chain links to accelerate workflows, increase transparency, and reduce losses; strengthening after-sales support to build trust, reduce churn, and stabilise revenue; and embedding digital factors into strategic management through risk governance, continuity planning, and data-driven decision-making. Expected effects include higher customer lifetime value (CLV), retention, service reliability, and competitive advantages in international markets. Practical implications: The model supports IT companies in diagnosing value-chain vulnerabilities, prioritising resilience investments, designing continuity-focused practices, and improving customer communications under disruption; it is also useful for policymakers and industry associations developing wartime support instruments for the digital sector.
